Choice of residential area - Granta Park, Cambridge

Commuting by car

Located on the junction of the A11, A505 and A1307, Granta Park offers the prospect of a relatively uncongested drive to work compared with many other employment locations within the Cambridge area.  Within this area there is serious peak period congestion at the following points:

  • All approaches into the City and at “pinch points” on the outskirts, in particular around Addenbrookes Hospital, on the Newmarket Road back to the A14, and crossing or joining the A14 at Milton or Histon;

  • Junctions 11, 12 and 13 of the M11 (getting off in the mornings and on at night);

  • The A14 from the Milton interchange (Science Park) all the way to Huntingdon.

If you intend to live outside the City avoid anywhere that requires use of the A14 west of Milton.  Use of the M11 is fine provided you come off at Junction 9 (from the south) or Junction 10 (from the north).  The A11 up to Newmarket is uncongested.

Getting to Granta Park by car from central Cambridge is reasonable, particularly once you have passed Addenbrookes.  The east side of the City offers good access to the A11 while on the west side there are several access points for the M11.

As regards housing, central Cambridge and villages to the south west and west of the City offer the most attractive environment, good schools and facilities.  However, they are expensive.  Cambridge suburbs and villages to the south east and north are more mixed and generally less costly.

When considering where to live do not forget south west Suffolk.  This includes Haverhill where there has been considerable new development and which provides the cheapest housing in the area.  Much more physically attractive and still much less pricey than the Cambridge area are the Suffolk villages.  If you want a village environment these are well worth a look.  The car commute to Granta Park involves use of the A1307 (Cambridge to Haverhill road) on which peak period traffic is heavy but generally free flowing apart from a stretch near Linton.
