Develop IQ win at 2011 EHealth Insider Awards
24/10/2011
DevelopIQ, based at Chineham Park in Basingstoke, has won the Best Use of Mobile Technology in Healthcare at the 2011 EHI Awards. The EHealth Insider Awards recognise the most innovative use of technology within the healthcare system, and are judged by leading experts from senior IT, clinical, nursing and management positions in the industry.
On winning the award Richard Sargent, Project Delivery Director at DevelopIQ, commented, “Both ourselves and the maternity team at Portsmouth are thrilled to have won this major industry award. The solution is delivering compelling savings at a time of great financial pressure in the NHS, but more importantly it is ensuring that patient data recorded in the home is available immediately back at the hospital and that no sensitive patient data is lost or stolen. At Portsmouth they say that the solution is freeing time to care and we believe that says it all.”
DevelopIQ developed a pioneering mobile data capture system using Anoto digital pens and BlackBerry smartphones, which has enabled community midwives to digitise handwritten notes taken during visits with expectant mothers and automatically update the Hospital’s patient records system remotely, without having to return to the hospital and re-enter information later.
Caring for patients at home brings with it a large amount of administration and note-taking using paper forms. The Trust needed to find a more efficient way for the midwives and nurses to take note electronically whilst on patient visits. By using the BlackBerry®solution with PaperIQ, they would eliminate the double entry of information as digital notes are taken at the episode of care with the mother and then immediately and securely transferred to the patient record system. This means that no patient-identifiable information is carried with the midwife whilst they are in the community which, in turn, protects against information getting mislaid, lost or stolen.
Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust estimates that the BlackBerry© solution with PaperIQ for the midwives will yield £220,000 in annual efficiency savings. Across a typical midwife’s schedule, it has halved the time spent on administration, from 98 minutes to 48 minutes. The BlackBerry© solution with PaperIQ will pay for itself and begin generating savings in the first year. In the second and third years it’s all savings.
Rupert Batho, managing director of Chineham Park, adds, "At Chineham Park we are rightly proud of our customers and their achievements. With DevelopIQ's ground breaking developments being recognised by this award win is great news for both DevelopIQ and all our customers, as it re-enforces the reputation of Chineham Park as the leading centre of telecoms innovation within Hampshire. We are very excited to see the success and growth that DevelopIQ has experienced - which is also reflected by the fact they have doubled in size to 24 staff since moving to Chineham Park earlier this year."
