MEPC Birchwood Park helps 40 cyclists raise over £15,000 children’s charity Brainwave
02/07/2012
Congratulations to the team of 40 cyclists from Birchwood Park and the local area who rode 220 miles over a three day charity bike ride with the aim of raising £7,000 for children’s charity Brainwave. They have so far more than doubled that target raising over £15,000.
The team set out last Friday from Bridgewater Place, Birchwood Park and cycled south in the pouring wind all the way down to Bridgewater in Somerset.
Many of the teams taking part in the ride are based at Birchwood Park, or supporters from across the North West. Companies taking part include Vaultex, Rolls-Royce Nuclear, DWP, Yellowbus Solutions, UTV Media, AMEC, DLA Piper and a team from Birchwood Park.
The team rode 70-75 miles each day. On the first day the team will left Bridgewater Place, Birchwood Park and rode to Shrewsbury. The following day they covered Shrewsbury to Monmouth and the final day they cycled from Monmouth to Brainwave’s Somerset headquarters, via the old Severn Bridge.
Suzanne Whitelaw, Marketing Manager at MEPC Birchwood Park said: “At Birchwood Park we do our best to support our local community, so it was important to choose a Birchwood-based charity. We have seen the difference the Brainwave programme can make to the lives of the children and their families using the therapy centre in Birchwood and we just want to do what we can to ensure as many children as possible can access this fantastic facility. We hope that target we have set for the year will help to do that.
“We were not expecting it to be easy, there are quite a few people on our team who hadn’t ridden a bike for over 20 years, and that included me! It is difficult fitting in the training around a full time job and a young family, but watching the Brainwave film and the lovely people I have met through the group training rides made it all worthwhile.”
Following the success of this event from both a fund raising objective and a fun challenge for the cyclists, another event is already being planned for next year.
The team is raising money to help children who are on the Brainwave programme. Anyone wishing to donate to Brainwave still can via Justgiving.co.uk/Brainwaveb2bchallenge or contact the North West Centre to make a donation on Tel: 01925 825547.
